Announcing a Strava Cycling Group for IT People

If you like to run or cycle, then you probably know what Strava is. If you like to run or cycle and don’t know what Strava is, you’re missing out! In one sentence, it allows you to map and track your runs and rides with a simply mobile app or a litany of GPS and heartrate monitor products.

I just started “The IT Crowd” Strava cycling group that I’d like to invite everything within hearing distance too. Yes, it’s a cycling group and not a running group. You can’t mix the two activities in the same group, which is mildly annoying and yet understandable (I like to both run and cycle).

The intent of the group is entirely recreational and does not imply any level of commitment to anything. Join up with a free Strava account and track your miles! Working in IT can be such a sedentary job that sometimes it’s nice to have a resources that helps you track and quantify your movement. Maybe at some point we can organize some recreational group challenges, but until then just stare at the leaderboard and pump your way into the top spots.

(Side note: You will most likely never overtake Eric Eisenhart or Iain Douglas, but at least you’ll have something to aspire to.)

It doesn’t matter where you are in the world or what kind of pedal powered contraption you have. Join up and get pedaling!

It’s trivially easy to overtake me: Just bike to work and back every day, but have your work be over 11.6 miles away from your home.
Dozens of people regularly surpass me in the Bike Commuter Cabal Strava Club. http://www.strava.com/clubs/bike-commuter-cabal-16375

Good work, fortunately I only have to sit at the computer an hour or two each day and the rest of the job has me running around. As our managers like to say duing our meetings, “Sitting Is the ‘New Smoking'”!

      I think I clock about 12 to 14 hours of sitting a day. I think I need a lifestyle change. <_<
